The Resurrection and Beyond, According to Luke

In this Thursday morning series, Nick looks at the end of Luke’s gospel, and the start of the book of Acts, and shines a light on Luke’s special way of telling the story of the impact that Jesus’ resurrection had, and how the early church took that great good news and shared it so successfully.

16 April 2026: Emmaus Part 1

Nick talks about the beautiful story of two crestfallen disciples, walking away from Jerusalem, who have witnessed Jesus’ death and don’t know yet that he has risen from the dead.

23 April 2026: Emmaus Part 2

Nick finishes the story of the road to Emmaus, and the two disciples recognise Jesus in the breaking of the bread, only for him to disappear from their sight. Our hearts should burn within us as we break bread, because that is when Jesus is most especially with us, too.

30 April 2026: The Upper Room

Now we are back in the Upper Room, and the mood is changing. All sorts of reports are coming in that Jesus isn’t dead, but has been seen alive. The disciples are beginning to believe.

14 May 2026: Ascension

Today was Ascension day, and we finished our journey through the last chapter of Luke’s gospel with this most mysterious story. What does it mean for us? All sorts of things, but among them, it means that Jesus is our King, Jesus is our friend, and Jesus is our Lord.

21 May 2025: Wait for it!

We continue with Luke for a few weeks’ more, and having finished the gospel, we now jump into the sequel. And the first thing we see is the disciples waiting. Jesus promised them a gift, but it hasn’t arrived yet, so they’re keeping themselves busy in the meantime.

28 May 2026: Pentecost

Next we look at how Luke describes the giving of the Holy Spirit. Or the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. And we speculate: has God finished pouring out his Spirit? Or is he continuing to flood our world deeper and deeper with his love?

4 June 2026: The Message and the Response

As we finish this look at Luke’s telliong of the resurrection of Jesus, and beyond, we exasmine how the good news of teh resurrection was being broadcast far and wide. And the respoinse is that people are astounded. They scramble to join this new movement in vast numbers.
