The Big Lunch is a national event that happens in June where communities up and down the country come together to get to know each other better and enjoy each others company.
The Big Lunch in Rye Park took place, facilitated by the community Minister from St Cuthbert’s Church with a group of over 40 volunteers drawn from local residents and the St Cuthbert’s congregation to bring together the community of Whitley Road and Ogard Road. It was a great day starting at 8.00 am with bacon sarnies and a time of prayers and songs as volunteers came together to set up the site.
This was a completely free event for all to share in and each house in Whitley Road and Ogard Road received their own special invitation. The idea was to come together to get to know each other, to bring and share food together, and have some fun. The electricity supply was provided by two of the neighbours and the event was subsidised by a grant from our Councillor, Tim Hutchings
Children’s craft ran in marquees all day, along with face paints and a giant Splat the Rat stall. There were a variety of musical acts to include Cuddyducks, Phil Dant, Jo Harris and Hertford indie band Shambles. Valle FX the renowned dance troop from Cheshunt did a spectacular dance act. In between the bands and the dancing there were a variety of games including a sack race, egg and spoon and others.
We had a huge variety of cakes and savoury food and along with plenty of tea, coffee and soft drinks, all were well fed.
Unlike last year the weather was superb and this certainly made the event more enjoyable as it was nice to sit out in the sun and enjoy the games the music and the food.
As this Big Lunch was also held to celebrate the Queens 90th Birthday, we handed out editions of the excellent book “The Servant Queen” A great memento of of her Majesty but also of a great day.
Can’t wait till next year
